Was OT YHWH really SATAN? – Part 4

Posted Oct 26/2018

Okay, let’s glance at the IMMENSE amount of ‘approval’ and ‘alignment’ Jesus and His disciples had of the OT YHWH—in morals, emotions, messianic expectations, and hopes for the promised future.

.....................................................

We can start that glance here, under a heading of “How different was Jesus from the OT YHWH?”

There are several sub-questions under that, so we will just run through them:

Did Jesus and His disciples ascribe OT events to both YHWH and the pre-Incarnate Christ?

John 12:41 --  Isaiah said these things because the saw his [Christ’s] glory and spoke of him

John 19:37  ‑And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Zechariah 12:10  ‑“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me [YHWH], on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Jude 5  ‑ Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

Exodus 12:51  ‑And on that very day the Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts. ; Numbers 14:35  ‑I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.

Numbers 14:29–30  ‑ your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

1 Peter 1:11  ‑ inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

Ephesians 5:14  ‑ for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Isaiah 26:19  ‑ Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.   ‑

Isaiah 60:1  ‑ Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

Did Jesus ever require ultimate allegiance to him – at the same level as YHWH?

Luke 14:26  ‑“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. ; Matthew 10:37  ‑ Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Deuteronomy 33:9  ‑ who said of his father and mother, ‘I regard them not’; he disowned his brothers and ignored his children. For they observed your word and kept your covenant.

Deut 13.6ff -- If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods’ (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him."

Were Jesus' God and YHWH opposite on their attitude toward death?

1 Timothy 2:04  ‑ who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Ezekiel 18:23  ‑ Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?

Did Jesus share imagery with the OT YHWH?

Matthew 26:64  ‑ Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Psalm 110:1  ‑The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”

Daniel 7:13  ‑“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.

Did Jesus share titles with the OT YHWH?

John 01:49  ‑ Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Zephaniah 3:15  ‑ The Lord has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil.

John 10:11  ‑ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Psalm 23:1  ‑ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. ; Isaiah 40:11  ‑He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

Ezekiel 34:15  ‑ I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God.

Did Jesus align himself with the emotions of OT YHWH?

Matthew 17:17  ‑ And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”

Deuteronomy 32:20  ‑And he said, ‘I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 32:5  ‑They have dealt corruptly with him; they are no longer his children because they are blemished; they are a crooked and twisted generation.

Did Jesus align himself with the morality of OT YHWH?

Luke 04:18–19  ‑“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Isaiah 58:6  ‑“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Isaiah 61:1–2  ‑The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

Matthew 09:13  ‑ Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Hosea 6:6  ‑ For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Matthew 23:12  ‑ Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Job 22:29  ‑ For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’; but he saves the lowly. ; Proverbs 29:23  ‑One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

Ezekiel 21:26  thus says the Lord God: Remove the turban and take off the crown. Things shall not remain as they are. Exalt that which is low, and bring low that which is exalted.

Matthew 23:23  ‑ “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

Matthew 19:18–19  ‑ He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Exodus 20:12–16  ‑ “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Did Jesus' teaching align with those of OT YHWH (even affirming the Law of Moses)?

Matthew 05:08  ‑“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Psalm 24:3–4  ‑Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

Jeremiah 7:11  ‑Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes?

Did Jesus submit willingly to OT Yahweh?

Luke 04:08  ‑8And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’ ”

Deuteronomy 6:13–14  ‑13It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. 14You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you—

Matthew 04:07  ‑Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

Deuteronomy 6:16  ‑“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.

Matthew 04:10  ‑10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”

Deuteronomy 6:13  ‑It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.

Did Jesus TRUST, PRAY to, and SUBMIT to the God who 'crushed him'  (Is 53) as "Father"?

Luke 23:34  ‑ And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

Psalm 22:18  ‑ they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

Isaiah 53:12  ‑ Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors;

Luke 23:46  ‑ Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.   ‑

Psalm 31:5  ‑ Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.   ‑

Luke 24.44,46 - Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” ---    Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,

Mark 14:35f -    And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”

Did Jesus tell others to submit willingly to OT Yahweh?

Luke 10:28  ‑ And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

Leviticus 18:5   You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.

Matthew 19:17  ‑And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”

Leviticus 18:5  ‑You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.

Matthew 22:37  ‑And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Deuteronomy 6:5  ‑You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Matthew 22:39  ‑And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Leviticus 19:18  ‑1You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Who did Jesus think made Him the cornerstone?

Luke 20:17  ‑ But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?

Psalm 118:22  ‑ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

Mark 12:10–11  ‑ Have you not read this Scripture: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

Psalm 118:22–23  ‑ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

Matthew 21:42  ‑ Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

Psalm 118:22–23  ‑ The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

These all show the alignment and continuity of Jesus’ life with the revealed life of YHWH in the OT—in its beauty and grace and truth and faithfulness.

.................................................................

But what about Judgement?!

People sometime  set up a Jesus-versus-YHWH ‘goodness’ match, and have Jesus the winner as the mercy and forgiveness and no-judgement party winner over the “God of judgement” YHWH.

But this is done in opposition to the plain teachings of our Lord and his students.

Jesus warned of judgment, and judgments in which HE was a key participant and agent.

His first sojourn on the earth was aimed at getting as many people OUT OF the judgement, but if they rejected the offer, they would still face Him in less pleasurable settings (e.g. courtroom).

Look at some of the passages by Jesus and His disciples about judgment and even judgment by Jesuswe will have to face these passages with humility too, recognizing that God will right the wrongs in the future, but that this will necessarily involve loss to the oppressors.

Did Jesus repudiate the promise of Yahweh's to correct imbalances, remove evil doers from our environment, and reward the good (judicial vengeance, social justice)?

Absolutely not—the Meek (for example) will have their stolen lands ripped from the hands of the powerful who stole them in the first place. Is this violence?—Yes, but it is correction of social injustice and wrongs that flowed from the fall from innocence and the effects of moral anti-good.

Did Jesus ever indicate that he would punish, reject or push people away, in his future kingdom?

Matthew 13:49 -- “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous,  ‑

Matthew 07:22  ‑ On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

Jeremiah 14:14  ‑ And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.

Jeremiah 27:15  ‑ I have not sent them, declares the Lord, but they are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.”

On that day,” like the idea of exclusion from the kingdom of heaven, indicates that this scene is set at the final judgment (NICNT).

Matthew 08:11  ‑ I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 18:15  ‑ “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

John 12.49: “I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled!

Matthew 13:41 -   ‑“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. “Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.  ‑  ‑Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind;  ‑ and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.

Matthew 16:27  ‑ For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Psalm 28:4  ‑ Give to them according to their work and according to the evil of their deeds; give to them according to the work of their hands; render them their due reward. ; Psalm 62:12  ‑ and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.

Proverbs 24:12  ‑ If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?

Did Jesus ever see himself in prophecies that included words of judgment, vengeance, recompense-for-deeds, and death?

Matthew 05:04  ‑“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Isaiah 61:2–3  ‑ to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

Luke 04:18–19  ‑“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”   ‑

Isaiah 61:1–2  ‑The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

Matthew 10:33 -       “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.

Mark 8:38 -- For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”  Luke 9:26 --  For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Matthew 12:18–21  ‑“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. 19He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; 20a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory; and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

Isaiah 42:1–4  ‑ Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.

Matthew 25:32   Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

Matthew 25:46  ‑  And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

John 07:24  ‑ Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Isaiah 11:3  ‑And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, Isaiah 11:4  ‑but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Leviticus 19:15  ‑“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

Matthew 10:35–36  ‑ For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.

Micah 7:6  ‑ for the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.

This role as judge in the future—as based on the prophecies about Him—was communicated to the disciples who also shared that sobering ‘reality-check’ with those they were sent to.

Did Jesus' disciples ever indicate that he would punish, reject or push people away, in his future kingdom?

2 Corinthians 05:10  ‑For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:14  ‑For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Acts 17:31  ‑because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

Psalm 9:8  ‑and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness. ; Psalm 98:9  ‑before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 96:13  ‑before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

2 Thessalonians 1:06ff  ‑  ‑For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed. (2 Thess 1:6ff)  ‑  ‑

2 Thessalonians 2:08  ‑ And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.

Job 4:9   By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.

Isaiah 11:4   but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Psalm 002:01-2; 12 -- Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,  “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” --- Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Luke 03:16f --  John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Mal 4:1 -- “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

Romans 02.16 -- the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.

1 Peter 3:10–12  ‑For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Psalm 34:12–16  ‑What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Jesus did NOT repudiate the promise of Yahweh's to correct imbalances, remove evil doers from our environment, and reward the good (judicial vengeance, social justice). In fact, His ministry of forgiveness was aimed at producing a people of righteousness, but some evils and adjustments will require a sovereign God and a fair-but-pure Jesus as Judge.

Now, the idea might be surfacing now that when you take the ‘sweet soft pictures of Jesus’ and add these reality-check ‘judgment pictures of Jesus’ (to get the complete view), that MAYBE the opposite thing should be done for the ‘judgment pictures of YHWH’—adding the ‘sweet soft pictures of YHWH’ to get a better perspective on the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are SO MANY of these elements in the OT—that drove the Psalmist to ecstasy and the prophets to heights of vision—and many of these are ‘hidden’ in the passages that trouble us.

At the end of the day, when we ask the question of ‘image of the father’ – was Christ really so different from the OT YHWH that somebody could believe Jesus’ Father could NOT HAVE BEEN the OT YHWH Jesus and His followers worshipped, honored, and tried to obey—the likeness of the Son to the Father (the express image) becomes more and more pronounced….
