Semi-Humor...Did Barth really say that famous quote?

Date: July 20/2003

Someone came through and asked this non-apologetic question (smile)...

"I have myself 'quoted' from time to time the Barthian adage that a preacher should preach 'with the bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other.' A friend recently asked me where that was from!!? To my consternation I did not know. So I searched the internet and found many references to THE quote (with various wording and interesting interpretations), but no actual citation of 'chapter and verse'. If you have any knowledge of this quotes source, I would appreciate the enlightenment. I am almost beginning to wonder if it might be apocryphal.
